My heart is breaking over the dissention in our household. We have three dogs and three cats and they have all gotten along. Our youngest dog Diamond has gradually gotten aggressive over toys and chews. She is part boxer and part unknown, and has always been so sweet and loving. She does have high anxiety and is very unsure of herself, which I think is a bigger issue then I first realized.
About two weeks ago (right before Christmas), Diamond was playing with a tug rope and our 10 year old black lab Jake went over and grabbed one end of the tug rope like he has done hundreds of times before. They tugged for about a minute and Diamond then just attacked Jake. I got the two of them apart and she immediately attacked him again. We kept them separated for a while, but the next day Diamond attack Jake again when all he did was walk into the room. Thinking this was serious, I researched dog behavior and could not find anything really that would help me resolve the issue or even why it was happening. Jake is a male, Diamond is a female. Jake has been high ranking dog (we try to be alpha humans, but think we much have failed this role thus far). Jake does not seem ill nor does Diamond. Diamond will be three this month which is finally maturity for a boxer. She is a mutt, but has some boxer characteristics and tendencies. Jake being 10 is getting older and the only thing I can figure is Diamond is trying to take top rank over Jake. But she is so vicious it is scary and she is unpredictable.
Diamond must wear a muzzle all day and I cannot leave the two dogs alone ever. I just don’t feel it would be safe. I feel I will need to rehome Diamond because I don’t feel I could ever trust her around Jake. I am torn and lost, frustrated and forlorn. Diamond was a rescue (as were our other two dogs). I don’t want to give up. I have contacted a few trainers but have not found anyone that will work with us. Where is Cesar Millan when you need him?
Does anyone have advice for me?
