It has been a whirlwind of a few days for me. Last Thursday turned out to be one of the best days I had in a really long time. Last February one of our cats went out for a romp, and did not come back. Our cat Xavier, who we usually call “X” was our only inside/outside cat. The other two we have, do not go outside. One of the inside cats Clara is deaf and could never be an outside cat. And our slender black cat Olivia (who happens to be X’s sister) we keep inside as well. X is our Norwegian Forest cat and we called him our furry bowling ball because he was large and round. He weighed around 14 pounds when he became missing this winter. We were so worried about him. We called for him and looked for him and we found no traces of him at all. The winter nights were so cold and you can imagine how worried we were. We walked the woods behind our house, we wondered the streets and looked for him, but found no sign of him. Winter turned to Spring and our entire family talked about X and thought just maybe someone had taken him. He is such a wonderful sweet friendly guy; this was easy to imagine.
Winter turned to Spring, and still no sign of our guy. But… last Thursday I spotted a cat that looked like him, but was very thin. I called him and he turned around and looked at me. I started to go over to him, but he kept sauntering away. I was heading for a job interview and could not be late. When I came home, and looked for him. When my husband got home, the two of us wondered the woods calling his name. And then… a miracle happened! We heard him answer are calls. We followed the meows to our next door neighbors shed. Good thing our neighbors were not home; they would have thought Bob and I had lost our minds. There I was, sprawled out in their grass calling “kitty kitty kitty” staring into the dark abyss of their shed. But X called back and after a few minutes, he finally emerged! I picked him up and he was nothing but skin and bones. We took him home and fed him tuna and loved on him for hours! He weighs 5 pounds right now!
I know we will never know his story, but I believe he had angels watching over him. Had he been living under their shed all this time and if so, for heaven sake why? All I know is he is home safe and he is no longer allowed to wonder as an outside cat! we will fatten him back up to bowling ball status and remain grateful for his return.
